Xavier University's athletic department is promoting from within to fill its now formerly-vacant baseball head coaching position.
Xavier announced Tuesday the promotion of assistant baseball coach Billy O'Conner to the head coach position following the departure this month of Scott Googins, the winnings coach in XU history.
O'Conner, a Cincinnati native and former Xavier player, becomes the seventh head coach in Xavier history.
"Billy is the full package when it comes to his playing, coaching and recruiting experience," Athletic Director Greg Christopher said in a Tuesday news release. "His passion for Xavier, mind for the game and tireless recruiting efforts have made him an invaluable part of our coaching staff during some great years for the program.
