Xavier scored on the opening possession before the Boilermakers scored seven straight to take the lead, not trailing in the final 18:10 of the first half. Xavier used a 6-0 run to tie it up midway through the half, matching Purdue at 17-17 at the under-12 timeout. After going into the final nine minutes tied, Purdue outscored Xavier 9-2 to build a multiple-possession advantage, leading by as many as nine before going into halftime up eight, 37-29.
