When Ben Stanley withdrew his name from the NBA Draft and decided to transfer from Hampton University – on the heels of a season in which he averaged 22.0 points and 7.2 rebounds – his phone rang.
Which wasn’t uncommon at the time.
Coaches were calling the 6-foot-6 forward out of Baltimore, Maryland, to gauge his interest and see if they could convince him to join their program.
This call, though, was a little different.
"Coach Steele was the first one to call me. Not the first in my recruitment, but the first on the (Xavier) staff and that was cool because I was getting a lot of calls from assistant coaches from other schools," Stanley said Wednesday night, a few hours after committing to the Musketeers.
