SAN JOSE, Cal. – They put their best intentions into the makeshift urn and set them afire, along with every bad memory of a lost month of basketball. Their better selves, their more gracious natures, whom they wanted to be more often, burning side by side with disastrous February.
It was a ceremony devised by assistant coach Mike Pegues, and it came with a dual message: Yesterday is worthless, tomorrow might be overwhelming. What can we do today, this moment, to build the better Xavier basketball team? All we can do is all we can do.
