A program that supports University of Wyoming sports appears safe from budget cuts that could slash millions from K-12 schools and literacy programs for young readers and their parents.
State lawmakers voted last week to follow Gov. Matt Mead's recommendation to spend $8 million over the next two years on a matching program to improve athletic competitiveness at the University of Wyoming. The current match of $5 million per year helps pay for nutrition, recruiting, full cost of attendance and concussion testing, among other items. It does not fund salaries.
The lawmakers voted for the K-12 education cuts on the same day.
