Madison — John Settle made it clear during preseason camp that it would be critical to give untested tailbacks Dare Ogunbowale and Taiwan Deal enough work in Wisconsin's four nonconference games so they would be adequately prepared for Big Ten Conference play.
Settle, in his second stint as UW's running backs coach, didn't know at the time he would be forced to rely on Ogunbowale and Deal for almost 70% of the team's rushing attempts through three games.
And Settle didn't learn until Wednesday that starter Corey Clement, limited to eight carries in the opener, could miss most and perhaps all of Big Ten play because of a sports hernia.
