Wisconsin's Joe Schobert honored as Big Ten's top linebacker

Madison — Joe Schobert's rise from anonymity to all-star continues.

The senior linebacker, overlooked by Wisconsin until he was offered a walk-on spot about a month before he was set to join the North Dakota program in the summer of 2012, was named the Big Ten's Butkus-Fitzgerald linebacker of the year Monday.

A graduate of Waukesha West High School, Schobert was a consensus first-team pick.

Defensive players and specialists were named Monday. Offensive players are to be named Tuesday.

Schobert finished the regular season second in forced fumbles (five), third in the Big Ten in sacks (91/2) and third in tackles for loss (181/2).
