After their season opener against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks was postponed due to Covid-19 protocols, the Wisconsin Badgers women’s basketball team (1-0) secured an opening 73-66 win, their fourth straight season opening win, against the Western Illinois Leathernecks (0-1) on Sunday.
Sophomore Sydney Hilliard led UW with a career-high 24 points and eight rebounds. Junior Imani Lewis was the Badgers’ second-leading scoring with 13 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Sara Stapleton posted a double-double — the first of her career — with 11 points and 11 boards.
Both teams shot only 36 percent from the field, but head coach Jonathan Tsipis hopes things will change and was happy with the opening performance.
