Madison — John Settle showed during his first stint as Wisconsin's running backs coach a willingness to rely on freshmen and distribute the workload to keep the tailbacks fresh and hungry.
The best example came in 2010, Settle's last season on the staff:
Redshirt junior John Clay (187 carries), sophomore Montee Ball (163) and freshman James White (156) combined for 506 carries, 3,060 yards and 46 touchdowns.
White overtook Ball as the No. 2 tailback by the Big Ten opener and went on to be named the Big Ten Conference freshman of the year.
