New UW women's basketball coach wants to keep state's best players

Madison – The challenge facing Jonathan Tsipis is onerous but one he embraces.

Tsipis, who four years ago was asked to turn around the foundering women's basketball program at George Washington University, has as many NCAA Tournament appearances in the last two seasons as Wisconsin has in the last 15 seasons.

Tsipis, 43, emphasized his first task as Wisconsin's new women's basketball coach will be keeping the best players home, something former coach Bobbie Kelsey failed to prioritize.

"There are great women's basketball players coming out of this state," Tsipis said Thursday at this introductory news conference.
