Madison – Dick Bennett walked off the job three games into the 2000-'01 season, less than nine months after leading Wisconsin to the Final Four.
Brad Soderberg, Bennett's top assistant, was named interim head coach and had the opportunity to prove he was worthy of being named full-time coach.
After seeing a veteran team go one and done in the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments and finish 9-7 in the league and 16-10 overall, then-athletic director Pat Richter decided Soderberg was not the right man for the job.
He eventually turned to Bo Ryan.
