Madison — When Ann-Renée Desbiens first got to Madison three years ago, her English was rough but her hockey was smooth.
The French-Canadian would save a game and a season long before she would confidently pronounce Isthmus, Bascom Hill and Essen Haus.
But back in the 2013-'14 season, Alex Rigsby was a first-team All-American goaltender for Wisconsin with the distinction of being the first to record 100 wins in school history. Unfortunately, she injured a knee midway through that, her senior season.
Then just a freshman, Desbiens, who is from La Malbaie, a town 11/2 hours north of Quebec City, was thrown into action in a scoreless game at Minnesota Duluth and held on for a 1-0 victory.
