Badgers track and field: Malachy Schrobilgen places eighth in 10,000 meters at nationals

EUGENE, Ore. — Malachy Schrobilgen is the best the Big Ten Conference has to offer in the men’s 10,000 meters, but the sophomore is no match for Edward Cheserek.

Few have been.

Oregon’s Cheserek won his second straight title in the event Wednesday on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The sophomore finished in 28 minutes, 58.92 seconds — well off his winning time of 28:30.18 as a freshman. Teammate Eric Jenkins (28:59.13) was second and Schrobilgen was eighth (29:17.07).

It was the seventh individual NCAA title for Cheserek in cross country and track combined.
