EAST LANSING, Mich. — Saturday’s runner-up finish was all the motivation Kelsey Card needed.
After setting a school record but falling short of a Big Ten Conference title in discus, the University of Wisconsin junior made sure Sunday didn’t yield the same disappointment. Instead, Card responded in championship fashion, winning the shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 11¼ inches.
“I think yesterday’s runner-up finish motivated me,” Card said. “It gave me some fire to go out there and do the best I could.”
Card fell short of her conference-leading mark of 58-2, but she became the first UW athlete to win the Big Ten outdoor shot put title since Karen Nitsch in 1983.
