Badgers track and field: Kelsey Card takes second in the shot put at NCAA outdoor championships

EUGENE, Oregon — Only one huge throw kept University of Wisconsin junior Kelsey Card from winning the women’s shot put Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

And Southern Illinois freshman Raven Saunders provided the toss.

Card led heading into the final round after a Big Ten Conference-record throw of 58 feet, 111/4 inches. Sanders unleased a throw of 60-21/2 and Card could not overtake on her final attempt but still earned All-American honors.

Card’s second-place showing is the best by a UW woman at the championships since Erica Palmer was second in the 5,000 meters in 1999.
