Badgers track and field: Kelsey Card reclaims Big Ten discus record, earns spot at NCAA championships

Kelsey Card punched a ticket to the NCAA outdoor track and field championships on Friday, setting a Big Ten Conference women’s discus record in the process.

The University of Wisconsin junior turned in a throw of 196 feet, 6 inches at the NCAA West preliminary-round meet in Austin, Texas, finishing second to Texas A&M’s Shelbi Vaughan (199-11) and earning a spot in the NCAA meet June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.

Card’s throw topped the Big Ten mark — set by Michigan State’s Katelyn Daniels this season — by 3 feet.

Seniors Michael Lihrman and Scott Erickson also qualified for the NCAA championships, both in the men’s hammer throw.
