Badgers sports: Second-period flurry lifts women's hockey team in season opener

Mikaela Johnson had a goal and two assists as the No. 3 University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team beat Providence 5-1 in the non-conference season opener Friday night in San Jose, California.

Twelve players recorded points for UW, which scored four unanswered goals in the second period.

Junior Ann-Renee Desbiens saved 18 of the 19 shots she faced to earn her 38th career victory.

The Friars scored the opening goal on Katie Friesen’s conversion at 8 minutes, 39 seconds of the first period. Annie Pankowski evened the score on a power-play tally with 1:14 left in the period.
