CHICAGO --Shaelyn Sorensen didn't enjoy the way she started Sunday's Big Ten Cross Country Championship, but she was pleased with her finish.
And her coach was thrilled.
Sorensen overcame difficulty early to finish seventh and lead the University of Wisconsin women's squad to a fifth-place finish on the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course along Lake Michigan. The UW men finished eighth after two-time defending champion Malachy Schrobilgen dropped out with an injury.
Sorensen, a redshirt freshman, covered the 6-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 15.9 seconds and was the top freshman finisher among the field of 122 runners.
