Andy Baggot: Budget cuts, rising costs could put squeeze on UW athletics

Five years can seem like an eternity in the world of major college athletics.

Ask anyone whose school is experiencing a fiery, prominent death spiral — think University of Wisconsin football in the late 1980s — when one day as a supporter can feel like a month of colonoscopy prep.

By the same token, five years can whiz by in the blink of an eye.

That tends to occur when a dynamic student-athlete arrives on campus, becomes a transformative force and writes a mesmerizing script that makes it seem like time has flown by.

So it will be interesting to gauge the mood in and around the UW Athletic Department in 2020.
