Only two springs ago, long-suffering fans of the Winnipeg Jets believed that, if they hadn’t arrived in hockey’s Valhalla, they at least could see the sign setting out the city limits. After displaying the patience of Job for three-and-a-half decades, after watching their first NHL franchise arrive and depart and another city’s arrive to take the first one’s place, and after six seasons failed to produce so much as a single post-season victory, Winnipeggers at long last had a team that looked like it could win a Stanley Cup.
