The Winnipeg Jets dipped their toes in the NHL’s free-agency waters this afternoon.

After an hour of a frenzy that saw teams spend more than $335 million in the first 60 minutes, the Jets agreed to terms with centre Shawn Matthias on a two-year deal about 90 minutes after market opening.

TSN reported the deal as $4.3 million over the two years.

Matthias, 28, is a former second-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2006.

He has played 479 NHL games with four different teams, recording 81-78-159 on a career scoring chart.

Last season, Matthias started with the Toronto Maple Leafs and after 51 games was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he played 20 more.
