Edmonton Oilers lead 1-0 against Winnipeg Jets after first period

EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid scored a power-play goal early in the first period to hand the host Edmonton Oilers a 1-0 lead on the Winnipeg Jets after 20 minutes Thursday night at Rogers Place.

The 19-year-old Oilers captain took a pass from Jordan Eberle, dangled around Winnipeg defenceman Ben Chiarot and then fired the puck past goalie Connor Hellebuyck at 5:16 with blueliner Mark Stuart serving a tripping penalty.

The Jets nearly tied the game on a power-play chance of their own, but Oilers netminder Jonas Gustavsson made a great save off Bryan Little from in tight with about 20 seconds left in the period.
