In recent weeks, some pundits have started wondering if young stars such as Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews and Winnipeg Jets left winger Patrik Laine might receive offer sheets from rival clubs next July.
Selected first and second overall in the 2016 NHL Draft, Matthews and Laine quickly established themselves among the NHL's elite. They will complete their entry-level contracts next summer and could seek significant raises on new long-term deals. Their respective clubs could also face a salary-cap crunch next summer, making the duo prime offer-sheet targets.
