Wichita State’s Hunter Veith is sixth with 4,242 points after the first day of the decathlon at the NCAA outdoor championships in Eugene, Ore.
Veith, a junior from Cheney, started the day with a personal-record time of 10.66 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He finished second in the long jump with a distance of 25 feet, 3 1/2 inches, one inch behind Georgia’s Devon Williams.
He finished 21st in the 24-man field with a throw of 41-8 3/4 in the shot put. He jumped 6-7 in the high jump to finish sixth.
Veith ended the day finishing ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.
