Wichita State dropped the first two sets to Marquette before rallying to win the match with a 19-17 decision in the final set in the Hampton Inn Invitational in Indianapolis on Saturday morning.
The Shockers (5-0) trailed 10-8 and 13-11 in the deciding set. Then they escaped match point down 14-13. WSU took an 18-17 lead on an attack error and won the match on Tabitha Brown’s ace.
The 3-2 (20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 19-17) extends WSU’s longest season-opening win streak since the 2008 team went 29-0.
Brown led WSU with a career-high 21 kills. Abbie Lehman added 12 kills and five blocks.
