PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. – Wichita State's top women's tennis doubles duo of Gabriela Porubin and Julia Schiller moved one step closer to a berth in the 2016 US Open by winning the USTA Missouri Valley Sectional Qualifier last weekend at the Homestead Country Club.
The Missouri Valley Sectional Qualifier (not be confused with the Missouri Valley Conference) is one of 14 USTA sectional qualifying tournaments held throughout the spring and summer.
Porubin and Schiller went 3-0 to win their sectional draw, dropping just eight games over six sets. They won an all-Shocker semifinal against graduating senior Summer Schlotterback and volunteer assistant Yokkie Mahajaroenkul, 6-1, 6-2, and dispatched the team of Gabby Lee and Sarah Wilcox in the final, 6-0, 6-4
Porubin and Schiller (23-10 during the NCAA season) will compete in August against the winners of 13 other sectionals for a wild card spot in the US Open's main draw.
