Wichita State’s Jordan Boyer did not want the second chance at the game-changing at-bat, not at first. When forced to swing again, he turned bad fortune into a leadoff double.
The fifth-seeded Shockers outlasted fourth-seeded Southern Illinois 3-1 in 10 innings on Wednesday night in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at Hammons Field.
Boyer’s double started the events which preserved a superb pitching performance and rescued an offense that featured designated hitter Willie Schwanke and little else for nine innings.
“We’re here to win this whole thing and this is a great way to get it going,” pitcher Zach Lewis said.
