HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougars scored four times in the bottom of the eighth to erase a 3-1 deficit, knocking off Wichita State 5-3 on Friday night at Schroeder Park.
The Shockers (27-18, 10-6) were six outs away from a series-opening victory, but committed a series of costly defensive miscues in the decisive eighth inning. After a leadoff single started the frame, Ian McMillan smashed a hard ground ball to shortstop that ricocheted off David Herring into left, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Nate Snead (0-2) came out of the Shocker bullpen and got Drew Bianco to ground out weakly to the mound, scoring a run to cut the WSU lead to 3-2.
