Western Michigan women’s basketball started its season with a win over Arkansas State, 61-52. As part of the Mid-American Conference-Sun Belt challenge, the MAC won the women’s challenge 8-4.
Hannah Spitzley led the way for Western, scoring 15 in the season opener. Spitzley was joined by Artemis Kouki and Vinyet Morato as the only Broncos in double figures, with 11 and 12 points respectively.
It was a good defensive performance for WMU to open the season as it held the Red Wolves to just 31.7 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from three. Just two Arkansas State players were in double figures, and Western tallied six steals.
