AKRON, Ohio - The No. 8 seeded Western Michigan softball team opened the 2019 Mid-American Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon versus No. 1 seed Miami University, falling 2-0 at Firestone Stadium.
Miami's starting pitcher Courtney Vierstra went the distance in the pitcher's circle, limiting the Broncos to just three hits. A two-run fifth inning for the Redhawks was the difference, scoring a pair of runs one three two-out singles and a passed ball.
Eight Bronco runners were left on base, including a couple stranded on third base in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Logan Carter and Sydney Stefanick both doubled but weren't able to come around and score.
