Väisänen Named NCHC Defenseman of the Week

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the second time in three weeks, Western Michigan freshman Joona Väisänen was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Defenseman of the Week.

The Finnish blue liner led all NCHC defenseman in points this weekend, collecting three assists en route to WMU's first Penrose Cup in program history. Väisänen also had two shots on goal and was +1 on the weekend.

In Friday night's Penrose Cup clinching win, the Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick collected two assists, including a helper on the game-winning goal in the third period. He followed that up with another assist in Saturday night's game, helping the Brown and Gold tie the game in the third period.
