Designated as a federal holiday and a national day of service since 1986, and finally recognized across all 50 states in 2000, the activist and minister Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is remembered throughout the country Monday on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
While courts, postal and government offices will close to observe the holiday, citizens are encouraged to take part in local volunteer opportunities as part of the day of service.
The Kalamazoo community, as well as Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College, will host events open for students and community members to get involved.
