CLEVELAND -- Western Michigan track and field's Maria McDaniel was named Mid-American Conference Track Athlete of the Week after winning the mile run and helping the Broncos take second place at the Illini Classic over the weekend.
McDaniel ran the second-fastest mile time in program history to earn her second win of the season, finishing with a personal-best time of 4:50.34. McDaniel battled with Katherine Turner from Butler in the race, pulling away in the final 200 meters to finish 1.28 seconds ahead of her top competitor. The sophomore has now won the mile race in both of WMU's meets so far this indoor season.
