How WMU's Thomas Wilder went from one scholarship offer to verge of NBA

KALAMAZOO, MI - As a three-time All-Mid-American Conference point guard, Thomas Wilder's decision-making was vital to Western Michigan's success during his four years in Kalamazoo.

But it's also his decision-making that's drawing the most questions from NBA scouts as he prepares for the 2018 entry draft.

Specifically, his decision not to transfer out of WMU.

There were more than 800 Division-I men's basketball transfers in 2017, and in an era when switching schools is becoming more common than sticking around four years, the question surrounding Wilder was, "Why'd you stay?"

"His sophomore year, he led the MAC in scoring, and I was asked by one NBA scout, and (Thomas) was asked by at least two, why didn't he transfer after his sophomore year," WMU coach Steve Hawkins said.
