MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore Ayiana Gaines broke the school 600-meter run record and the Western Michigan track and field team had two top collegiate finishes at the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota on Saturday.
Gaines ran a time of 1:32.98 to take second overall but was the top collegiate finisher in the race, breaking Victoria Chatman's old record by one second. Alena Brooks, an unattached professional runner, took first with a time of 1:31.82.
Fellow sophomore Maria McDaniel was the other top collegiate finisher for the Broncos. McDaniel took second overall in the 3,000-meter run with a 9:31.
