COLUMN: Why is the Western-Central game behind a paywall?

When I first reported in the Western Herald the news that multiple Mid-American Conference events would be broadcast on ESPN+, the new subscription streaming service from ESPN, my first fear was that some big MAC rivalry games, such as the Western Michigan University-Central Michigan University football game, would not be broadcast on television, and be relegated behind the subscription paywall of ESPN+.

That fear was quickly confirmed and realized.

This Saturday’s battle for the Victory Cannon at CMU’s Kelly/Shorts Stadium will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+, behind a $4.99/month and $49.99/year paywall.

This isn’t too much of a problem for CMU fans, since it’s on their home turf, but it could potentially be a problem for fans of WMU, especially students.
