The No. 10 Western Michigan hockey team (18-12-1, 11-9-1 NCHC) narrowly upset the top team in the country, St. Cloud State (24-4-3, 16-2-3).
The Broncos held a 4-2 lead about halfway through the third period, but then lapses in defense allowed SCSU to score three unanswered goals, including the game-winner with just 14 seconds remaining.
Just a minute into the first period, SCSU opened the scoring on a breakaway goal from Patrick Newell, his 17th goal and conference-leading 36th point on the year. This was the sixth time in the last seven games the Broncos allowed the first goal.
