Western Kentucky's softball team opened the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Fling tournament Thursday with an 8-2 win over Illinois State at the WKU Softball Complex.
A four-run first inning gave the Hilltopper pitching staff all the run support it needed in the win. Three Hilltoppers each registered a pair of RBIs in the game.
In the first inning, WKU's Haylee Towers plated a pair with the bases loaded on a misplayed ball to third base, and then with two outs Adarian Gray delivered a two-run double to give the Hilltoppers a 4-0 lead after one inning.
WKU tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
