Sanford to call plays, work closely with QBs

Mike Sanford’s background has come from coaching quarterbacks and directing offenses.

After letting others fill those roles in 2017, Western Kentucky’s second-year coach will take a more hands-on approach in both those areas this season.

Sanford will call offensive plays in 2018, a role that was performed last season by Junior Adams, offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach. Adams will keep those titles and will work with Sanford and tight ends coach Ryan Mahaffey in coordinating the Hilltoppers’ passing game.

Sanford has promoted former graduate assistant Matthew Mitchell to become WKU’s new quarterbacks coach. The head coach will also work with QBs himself on the field and in the meeting room.
