Western Kentucky coaches don’t know who’ll step up as the 2018 Hilltoppers’ go-to running back. But they plan to give five players the chance to earn that distinction.
The Toppers featured a 1,000-yard rusher in the seven years before Sanford’s arrival last offseason. Running backs Bobby Rainey (2010-11), Antonio Andrews (2012-13), Leon Allen (2014) and Anthony “Ace” Wales (2015-16) all cracked the century mark.
Last year, WKU never found a feature back. Ferby’s 373 rushing yards, which came at just 3.2 yards per carry, were the most any Hilltopper produced.
Sanford emphasized that competition for carries was wide open going into fall camp.
