Mike Sanford has come forth as a candidate for the Western Kentucky coaching job, sources have told the Daily News.
Sports Illustrated on Monday afternoon reported that Sanford, Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, is “expected to be the next coach at Western Kentucky.” Sources said reports of Sanford’s hire are premature and that WKU isn’t yet to that point.
Sanford is a familiar name with the Hilltopper program. He was quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator in 2010 on former coach Willie Taggart’s first WKU staff.
Sanford has risen through the coaching business quickly since then, working as an offensive assistant at Stanford from 2011-13, as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Boise State in 2014 and in his current position at Notre Dame the last two seasons.
