Tennessee offensive coordinator and former WKU assistant Tyson Helton is considered a major candidate for the Toppers’ coaching job, the Daily News learned Sunday.
Helton and other coaches will be vying to replace Mike Sanford. He was dismissed Sunday after posting a 9-16 record in two seasons coaching the Toppers.
Athletic director Todd Stewart said Sunday the search to fill the job is underway.
“We need to hire someone that’s a good fit and we need to hire someone that brings energy and really an infusion of excitement to our program and our players.”
Helton was one of eight candidates Stewart interviewed for the WKU job in December 2016 after Jeff Brohm left his post to take over at Purdue.
