Competition breeds success for Hilltopper QB White

One week before throwing for more than 500 yards in his Western Kentucky debut Thursday, Mike White hadn’t yet been named the team’s starting quarterback.

The race to replace longtime Hilltoppers QB Brandon Doughty began after the 2015 season and lasted all the way until Aug. 26, when coach Jeff Brohm named White his starter.

Six days later, White went wild against Rice. The redshirt junior completed 25 of 31 passes for 517 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as WKU routed visiting Rice 46-14 in its 2016 opener at Houchens-Smith Stadium.

“I thought he played outstanding,” Brohm said.
