CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Lanay Montgomery delivered 13 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks and the West Virginia women took down previously unbeaten Marshall 66-60 in the annual Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic on Sunday.
Played in front of 3,173 fans at the Charleston Civic Center, the Mountaineers (7-2) won their 11th straight in the series thanks to 15 points by reserve Tynice Martin and a 12-point, 10-assist double-double from Bria Holmes.
Marshall (6-1) nearly erased a 10-point deficit when Leah Scott’s free throw cut WVU’s lead to 52-49 with 7 minutes remaining. But Scott, who finished with a game-high 24 points, didn’t attempt another shot until the final seconds when the Mountaineers led by eight.
