CHARLESTON, S.C. – A two-run, ninth-inning rally gave West Virginia’s baseball team a late chance on Opening Day before Charleston Southern hung on for a 4-3 win Friday.
Chris Singleton went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Buccaneers, who avenged last year’s three-game sweep at WVU.
Catcher Ray Guerrini’s second triple gave the Mountaineers life in the ninth. KC Huth reached on an infield error that scored Guerrini and Kyle Davis’ fielder’s choice grounder scored Huth to make it a one-run game. That’s when closer Chase Hubbard finally secured the save by striking out Darius Hill with the tying run on first.
