MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A stout defensive effort and Michaela Abam’s two goals carried No. 5 West Virginia past Longwood 4-0 on Sunday in women’s soccer action.
The Mountaineers (7-1) used smothering defense to prevent the Lancers (3-4) from taking a shot, only the fifth time in program history that has happened.
“I’m really pleased with the way the defense is playing right now,” said Mountaineers coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, whose team posted its sixth straight shutout. “Our hope is that we’ll continue to climb. Most importantly, we want that No. 1 ranking at the end of the year.
