MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Top-ranked West Virginia peppered shot after shot before Michaela Abam’s golden goal in the 104th minute finally delivered a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
“It’s always a frustrating time when you take as many shots as we were then it’s not going in,” said Abam. “Our coaches were just telling us to stay calm, make sure to stay over the ball and keep taking shots. In the end, it paid off.”
Despite a 26-5 edge in shots, the Mountaineers (21-1-1, 8-0) needed extra time to earn their second straight Sweet 16 berth as upset-minded Ohio State (11-7-3) packed in the defense.
