Virginia Tech has averaged 5,118 fans for five home games at Cassell Coliseum this season. Wednesday’s matchup against No. 19 West Virginia is expected to draw twice that.
To Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins, the announced sellout provides a blistering atmosphere not always present during nonconference games, even if the Hokies (8-4) aren’t garner much national acclaim.
“All I kept hearing was that we don’t have Pitt on the schedule and we don’t have a rivalry,” Huggins said. “I remember well how big of a rivalry Virginia Tech was when I was in school here and that’s honestly the reason I did it.
