MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Outside of Brett Parham’s office one day at Brewer High School in Fort Worth, Texas, quarterback Skyler Howard — the quarterback coach’s star pupil — came up to him. As long as Parham had known Howard, he had been defined by his confidence and his unrelenting belief that he was prepared for anything.
But on this day, there was doubt.
“Do you think I’m a Division I quarterback?” he asked.
Parham, who had worked with Howard since the eighth grade, knew he was. The problem, though, was that nobody else did, as Howard’s senior season trudged on without a single scholarship offer.
