NCAA paves the way for athletes to earn endorsement money

The NCAA Board of Governors announced Tuesday that college athletes will have the “opportunity to benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.”

What that actually will look like remains to be seen.

Reached while traveling in Texas ahead of West Virginia’s Thursday night game at Baylor, WVU athletic director Shane Lyons said he was aware of the ruling, but wasn’t in a position to comment on it until more details are known.

Tuesday’s announcement is merely the first step in a process that figures to carry over into next year.
